Vanessa Cogdell is the Director of BOOST at Robeson Community College. She has over 18 years of student service and grant management experience. Her work experience has included directing 2 US Department Labor TAACCCT grants, student counseling, disability services, military outreach, federal grant reviews and serving as the Director of Financial Aid and Veterans Services. Dr. Cogdell is passionate about college access and looks forward to assisting students as they pursue new allied health career pathways.

The BOOST program at Robeson Community College hosted a goal-setting workshop facilitated by Jan Spence.  Jan energized the crowd challenging traditional methods of accomplishing New Year’s resolutions and goals.  She asked all attendees to define their core values and use those values to assist them in setting and achieving “Big Hairy Goals.”

BOOST Spring 2017 Cohort

BOOST is excited to welcome the 7th and final cohort of participants under the BOOST TAACCCT grant.  BOOST staff worked tirelessly to recruit 58 new BOOST participants enabling the grant to exceed it's expected total outcome of 336.  We are looking forward to continuing to serve students and support faculty in the new year.  Congratulations and welcome to the new Spring 2017 cohort and all returning students.

A mid-year perspective

A mid-year perspective

To date, BOOST at Robeson Community College has served 228 pre-health students providing unprecedented access to simulation, 3D/VR, and proactive wrap-around support services.   BOOST staff and faculty work collaboratively with campus support and administrative offices to make the grant’s statement of work a concrete reality that ultimately enhances the success of program participants.

Royalty @ Robeson Community College

Royalty @ Robeson Community College

Robeson Community College staff  and faculty members recently attended a BOOST retreat in Jekyll Island, Georgia.  The retreat provided an opportunity for all colleges in the three state consortium (North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama) to gain valuable updates, network, and learn from each other.  The retreat focused on all that the grant has accomplished as well as milestones we must reach.  Interim Director, Amanda Leevan, stressed that as we enter our third year of the grant we must remained focus on our participants increasing learner and employment outcomes.  All were encouraged to sprint to the finish.  While, attending the training and learning about critical next steps Robeson Community College’s BOOST program was honored to receive recognition for collaborative efforts.  The program was recognized for having the best Workforce Collaboration based on existing partnerships with NC Works and the Lumber River Workforce Development Board.  We are so very thankful for the support of all of our employer partners.

Antonio Patterson Joins BOOST

Antonio Patterson Joins BOOST

mrpattersonAntonio Patterson has joined BOOST to serve as a counselor for the duration of the BOOST grant.  Patterson has more than 15 years of counseling experience at government agencies and institutions of higher education. Through his professional experience, he has developed resources and established relationships with community organizations and local businesses to assist students in preparing for the workforce. Mr. Patterson has a participative leadership style and prides himself in providing excellent customer service. “I am looking forward to using my experience and connections to help our students rise above the barriers that would keep them from reaching their career and educational goals.” Patterson earned a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Human Resources Development from Webster University.

Julie Barnes Baxley Joins BOOST

Julie BaxleyJulie Baxley is the Health Science Workforce Development Coordinator for the BOOST grant.   She most recently served as the Project Manager- for the North Carolina Advanced Manufacturing Alliance an $18.8 million Round 1 TAACCT grant funded through the Federal Department of Labor.  During the life of the grant, 440 students at Robeson Community College received wrap around student support services.  Twenty-four out of twenty-six industry partners participated in the internship and/or direct job placement program providing 125 students internships or permanent employment.

Healthcare Careers for Veterans

Healthcare Careers for Veterans

Robeson Community College (RCC) recently celebrated two veterans who work within the Workforce Development Division, Michael Anderson and Douglas Lodge. Both are veterans who have transitioned to rewarding careers after retirement from the Armed Services. Mr. Lodge is a Human Resource Development Instructor who works to prepare adults to compete for jobs within the region while Mr. Anderson is Medical Simulation Specialist.

Like RCC most employers recognize the wealth of knowledge and experience veterans possess.  For those of you who are considering a new career after separation from the military GI Jobs April 2015 issue lists 20 Hot Jobs for veterans and among them were healthcare worker. BOOST currently serves many veterans and recruits others who want to pursue a civilian career in healthcare.

Flood Relief for South Carolina

Flood Relief for South Carolina

BOOST participants and staff are concerned about their consortium peers in South Carolina Community Colleges who are facing the aftermath of Tropical Storm Joaquin. Currently, the state and college are in recovery and prayer mode as families grapple with putting life back together after devastating flood damage.

We are asking those who are able to give monetarily to support the Salvation Army as they assist first-responders and those in need. Donations can be made directly to the East Coast Flood Disaster Fund at https://donate.salvationarmyusa.org/disaster/East-Coast-Floods-Disaster-Relief. In addition, the weather channel provides a list of ways to support the citizens of South Carolina.

Summer review

Summer review

The BOOST program experienced a very busy and exciting summer.  Programs accepted 21 new participants, we celebrated the official opening of our labs and national Nursing Assistant Week, and staff underwent professional development to remain up-to-date.

The highlight of the summer was the official opening of the newly renovated BOOST simulation and cooperative learning labs.  The celebration marked the beginning of the 2015 National Nursing Assistant Week.  The week was filled with activities to honor direct care workers whose careers are dedicated to ensuring the health and well-being of others.  We were honored to have campus administrators, healthcare leaders, industry partners, Advisory and Board of Trustee members along with the campus community join the BOOST community  in recognizing the esteemed efforts of  career nurse aides.

Gloria Barnwell Joins BOOST

Gloria Barnwell is the Administrative Assistant for the Robeson Community College BOOST program.  Mrs. Barnwell has over 14 years of Office Administration experience.  In recent employment she served unemployed, underemployed, and veteran citizens with NC Works of Robeson County.  She prides herself in providing excellent customer service and is excited about joining the RCC community.  She can be reached here on the website.

Learning with your friends

Learning with your friends

Help is always around the corner when students least expect it. As a Certified Nursing Assistant, RCC and UNC-FSU student, and BOOST Recruiter, Ms. Lashona Miller wears many hats at Robeson Community College. She created a service learning exercise called Peer to Peer Learning with simulators this summer. This exercise was created for students who had taken the Nursing Assistant I course but needed extra practice with peers to prepare for the state certification to earn a credential.
