Dare to be different

Renowned speaker Jan Spence will offer a goal-setting workshop on 25 January 2017 in the BB & T room in Building 18.  The workshop, which is sponsored by BOOST, will deal with how goal setting can enable you to reach bigger and better goals.  She will provide inspiring ways in which realistic goal setting  can help you to reach your full potential.  Lunch will be provided, but space is limited and registration is required.  The workshop runs from 11:30 to 13:00.

BOOST at Robeson hosts multi-state consortium

Robeson Community College hosted the Quarterly BOOST consortium leadership meeting in September 2016.  Academic leaders and directors from South Carolina and Alabama schools were in attendance.  The consortium formally welcomed new Consortium Director, Gwen Preston.  The meeting focused on grant outcomes, program services, upcoming Annual Performance Reporting, and sustainability.  The consortium was encouraged to Finish Strong!

Credentials matter

Credentials matter

BOOST staff members practice what they preach, seeking national credentials to enhance their skills.  Program Director Vanessa Cogdell, Health Science Workforce Development Coordinator  Julie Baxley, and Counselor Antonio Patterson recently attended initial training required to become Nationally Certified Career Development Facilitators (CDF) at the NC Works Training Center.  CDFs gain in-depth knowledge about the following topics:

BOOST Ribbon Cutting Ceremony a huge success

BOOST Ribbon Cutting Ceremony a huge success

Robeson Community College opened a new state-of-the-art Medical Simulation Center. On 8 June, special guests and supporters of the grant were welcomed by college President, Dr. Pamela Hilbert at 5:30 in the afternoon and Vice President Channing Jones recognized special contributors guests.   Chaplain Dean Carter of Southeastern Health was instrumental blessing the facility prior to the symbolic ribbon cutting ceremony.  The event was coordinated by the Lumberton Chamber of Commerce, which sees the facility as supportive of the wellbeing of the local community at large as well as a source of medical personnel for local healthcare facilities in future.

Free documentary movie for healthcare professionals

Free documentary movie for healthcare professionals

A music and memory documentary film will be screened at the Carolina Civic Center Historic Theater on May 5th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The film is called ALIVE INSIDE and is about the neurological research that has been done using music as an alternative therapy for people with Alzheimer’s disease.

This therapeutical approach seems to temporarily improve cognition and communication, reduces agitation and wandering of patients, stimulates sensory and motor functions so that people become engaged again in their lives and surroundings, and reduces the use of sleep and pain medications. The therapy is also being used with dialysis and chemotherapy patients.

Vanessa Cogdell joins BOOST

Vanessa Cogdell joins BOOST

Vanessa Cogdell is the Director of the BOOST grant at Robeson Community College.  She joined Robeson Community College's staff at the start of February 2014.  She has over 17 years of student service and grant management experience.  Her work experience has included directing 2 US Department Labor TACCCT grants, student counseling, disability services, military outreach, federal grant reviews and serving as the Director of Financial Aid and Veterans Services. Ms. Cogdell is passionate about college access and looks forward to assisting students as they pursue new allied health career pathways.
