Seasonal Blahs or More Serious???

Seasonal Blahs or More Serious???

When I began writing this Blog, it was 60 days, 15 hours, 42 minutes, and 26 seconds until Spring 2017! Unfortunately, many people are experiencing the negative effects of too many cold, overcast dreary days, and lack of sun. It is normal to feel a little blue this time of year; however, when symptoms begin to interfere with how you

Career Development - The Black Hole...

Career Development - The Black Hole...

BOOST led efforts to celebrate National Career Development Week using the National Career Development Association’s platform to increase the focus on career development.  Leaders in business, industry, government, and education have recently acknowledged the deficiencies that limited resources and attention to career development has had on our society. “Career development has become the black hole in the paradigm that governs our approach to education. The costs of this neglect are staggering – both for young adults, many of whom end up unemployed or underemployed; and for American businesses, who are so often constrained by shortages of skilled workers.”

Preparation and Collaboration with Medical Simulation

Preparation and Collaboration with Medical Simulation

I recently attended a moulage class at Greenville Healthcare Simulation Center to hone my moulage design skills.  Moulage is the art of applying mock injuries for the purpose of simulating real-world experience for emergency medical training.  Preparation and professional development are important in the field of medical simulation for purposes of accuracy and effective training.  During the class I attended, I was taught advanced skills on how to prepare and cast molds to create moulage, including the Pos-Neg-Pos casting technique.

The Pos-Neg-Pos technique allows you to create realistic wounds and a mold to replicate the design.  Once you have created the wound using a positive mold, then you create a mold block around it to accept the molding material.  Once this hardens you pull the two apart from each other and then you have a mold to create multiples of your cast.  Afterwards, you paint and color the molds to look realistic, saving you time when you need moulage wounds on short notice. A little work on the front end will save you a lot of time when you need moulage to simulate injuries and provide students with realistic clinical experiences.

Preparing for FINALS!

Preparing for FINALS!

Preparing for finals can be somewhat nerve racking, but if you prepare properly you will allow yourself the best possible outcome and rock your FINALS! Here are a few tips:

1. Prepare a schedule: Spend a few minutes writing down everything you need to do in your calendar, from doing laundry and sleeping to writing papers and studying. Time has a tendency to slip away during finals week, so plan and keep track of it the best you can. Just because you've been able to pull all-night study sessions earlier in the semester doesn't mean it's

Need Extra Income

As I was shopping this week, I heard over the intercom that the store I was visiting was hiring extra help for the holidays.  I immediately thought about BOOST students.  Many students are looking to make extra income, especially after Hurricane Matthew.  Many retail stores in our area are hiring temporary workers for the Christmas Holiday season.  Many of these position will result in a permanent position.  I am currently working on a list of companies that will be hiring seasonal help and this list will be shared with students.  If you are interested in earning extra income and would like to apprly for one of these positions, please contact Mrs. Baxley at This email address is being protected from spambots. After the Storm...Lessons Learned

After the Storm...Lessons Learned

Hurricane Matthew and all of it’s devastation taught us many things. One being, in life getting to our accomplished GOALS does not happen in a straight line.  Many students were displaced from their homes and communities.  What a reminder to us that we will have storms that will come upon our lives, but as time goes by we slowly begin to rebuild BETTER than before.  Many in the community who were neighbors came together who might otherwise still be strangers.  We don’t have to give up on our dreams and goals, because of devastations that may come up in life.  We can always begin again.  HOPE has come alive for many of our students, and once again have some sense of normalcy. We made it through.  Click through for a look at our gallery of pictures from the flood.
