After the Storm...Lessons Learned

Hurricane Matthew and all of it’s devastation taught us many things. One being, in life getting to our accomplished GOALS does not happen in a straight line.  Many students were displaced from their homes and communities.  What a reminder to us that we will have storms that will come upon our lives, but as time goes by we slowly begin to rebuild BETTER than before.  Many in the community who were neighbors came together who might otherwise still be strangers.  We don’t have to give up on our dreams and goals, because of devastations that may come up in life.  We can always begin again.  HOPE has come alive for many of our students, and once again have some sense of normalcy. Royalty @ Robeson Community College

Royalty @ Robeson Community College

Robeson Community College staff  and faculty members recently attended a BOOST retreat in Jekyll Island, Georgia.  The retreat provided an opportunity for all colleges in the three state consortium (North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama) to gain valuable updates, network, and learn from each other.  The retreat focused on all that the grant has accomplished as well as milestones we must reach.  Interim Director, Amanda Leevan, stressed that as we enter our third year of the grant we must remained focus on our participants increasing learner and employment outcomes.  All were encouraged to sprint to the finish.  While, attending the training and learning about critical next steps Robeson Community College’s BOOST program was honored to receive recognition for collaborative efforts.  The program was recognized for having the best Workforce Collaboration based on existing partnerships with NC Works and the Lumber River Workforce Development Board.  We are so very thankful for the support of all of our employer partners.

Healthcare Careers for Veterans

Healthcare Careers for Veterans

Robeson Community College (RCC) recently celebrated two veterans who work within the Workforce Development Division, Michael Anderson and Douglas Lodge. Both are veterans who have transitioned to rewarding careers after retirement from the Armed Services. Mr. Lodge is a Human Resource Development Instructor who works to prepare adults to compete for jobs within the region while Mr. Anderson is Medical Simulation Specialist.

Like RCC most employers recognize the wealth of knowledge and experience veterans possess.  For those of you who are considering a new career after separation from the military GI Jobs April 2015 issue lists 20 Hot Jobs for veterans and among them were healthcare worker. BOOST currently serves many veterans and recruits others who want to pursue a civilian career in healthcare.

Scholarships Open House

Scholarships Open House

Robeson Community College is holding a scholarships workshop for students and future students to learn how to apply for and be in a better position to obtain a scholarship and also learn tips on getting financial aid.  Staff will be on hand to help people apply online for the Spring 2016 Robeson Community College Foundation Scholarships; teach people how to search for other scholarships and answer questions on getting financial aid.  During the session, there will also be a Q&A session with the Foundation Director.

The event will be on 1 October 2015, between 08:30 and 10:00 am.  It is not necessary to stay the entire time, those interested can come by when convenient.  It will take place in the Allied Health Building in Room 1749B.

Michael Anderson joins BOOST staff

Michael Anderson joins BOOST staff

Michael Anderson is the BOOST Medical Simulation Specialist at Robeson Community College. He is an Air Force Veteran with over 20 years of medical experience performing duties as an Independent Duty Medical Technician, (IDMT). He also brings expertise in Telehealth, IT and Medical Simulation, as well as education and training. He has trained and educated government, DOD, and civilian doctors, nurses, and technicians through the use of medical simulation honing their medical skills to become better providers. His mantra "Better patient outcomes through Medical Simulation"

BOOST Accepts First Cohort of Students

BOOST is excited to accept it's first Cohort of students during the Fall 2014 semester.  All participants completed Robeson Community College's admissions procedures, a BOOST application, and program interview.  Students will pursue the BOOST Quick Start core and entry-level healthcare credentials to include Certified Nursing Aide I.  Hats Off to the first Cohort!!

Lashona Miller joins BOOST staff

Lashona Miller is the BOOST Recruiting Specialist at Robeson Community College. She graduate of North Carolina Central University with a degree in Community Health Education. Her working experience has been in the field of public health working in various health education divisions for local and state government. She has experience in women's health, adolescent health, disease prevention and career counseling. Ms. Miller is dedicated to helping students achieve their dreams and reach their goals.

Angela Sumner joins BOOST staff

Angela Sumner is the BOOST Academic Career Coach. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Columbia College, SC. Her work experience includes: over 20 years of experience in non-profit management; directing programs in health and human services for families and children, tourism, economic development and commerce, and fundraising. As Academic Career Coach, she will work with students on resume development and soft skills, health-related volunteer and scholarship opportunities, and provide assistance with any obstacle that would prevent students from being successful academically.

Debra Branch joins BOOST Staff

Debra Branch joins BOOST Staff

Debra H. Branch is the Health Sciences Admission Coordinator for the BOOST grant at Robeson Community College.  She earned a MSW at East Carolina University. Ms. Branch’s professional career includes more than 25 years of direct social work practice.   For the past 12 years, she has been employed as an instructor/program coordinator in an undergraduate social work program.  As a member of the Lumbee Tribe, Ms. Branch is interested in improving retention rates and academic achievement among minority students in higher education.

Vanessa Cogdell joins BOOST

Vanessa Cogdell is the Director of the BOOST grant at Robeson Community College.  She joined Robeson Community College's staff at the start of February 2014.  She has over 17 years of student service and grant management experience.  Her work experience has included directing 2 US Department Labor TACCCT grants, student counseling, disability services, military outreach, federal grant reviews and serving as the Director of Financial Aid and Veterans Services. Ms. Cogdell is passionate about college access and looks forward to assisting students as they pursue new allied health career pathways.
